The model of industry described in "To Our Young Female Readers" of Parley's Magazine probably wasn't meant to be followed literally; but the virtue of work was a theme often expressed in works for children of the time.
TO OUR YOUNG FEMALE READERS (from Parley's Magazine, February 1836, p. 51)
A lady over 81 years of age, who lives in Barnstable County in Mass. has lately spun, in 9 weeks, 146 skeins of stocking yarn of superior quality; which is more than 16 skeins a week; or almost 3 a day. This, says the Barnstable Journal, is an example worthy the notice of some of the young misses of the present time.
